Product Description

This DVD contains the presentation which is shown in Portmeirion's Audio Visual Theatre, in which the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis narrates the story of the creation of Portmeirion Village.

The Hotel Portmeirion was opened by Clough Williams-Ellis at Easter 1926. Clough spent the next fifty years creating the surrounding village of Portmeirion to demonstrate how sympathetic development could enhance the natural landscape. He wanted to show that architecture could be uplifting, life-enhancing and fun and that architectural good manners was good business.

He wrote many books on archiecture in general but Portmeirion, he said, was "Really meant to speak for itself". Fortunately, in 1973, he agreed to allow Bruno de Hamil to record this commentary on Portmeirion for an early version of the audio visual show.

To celebrate Portmeirion's 80th anniversary in 2006 a revised Audio Visual presentation was commissioned using new footage along with archive material and Sir Clough's original commentary.

A new musical score was commissioned and this was composed and recorded by Twm Morys and Edwin Humphreys at Stiwdio Ofn, Rhosneigr.

A Welsh language option is also included on this DVD, which was recorded by Clough Williams-Ellis' grandson Robin Llywelyn.
